This movie is an interesting concept : Part Mockumentary/part action. A strange (prawn) cocktail sprinkled with scathing
political connotations. The documentary side is cleverly used to recapitulate the events since the arrival of the alien spaceship. And as the aliens are moved to a different location, the story unfolds with sheer ebullience. Director Neil Blomkamp adopts a full-on approach from the start. If first, it is perhaps difficult to side with anybody, we gradually sympathize with Wilkus, the unlikely and unwilling hero, Christopher Johnson the alien father and his son, little C.J (Arguably the best character in the story). Obviously it is no coincidence that South Africa provides the background to this fantasy. "Apartheid" comes to mind, but not only in South Africa. Furthermore Bloomkamp may ask the question : What if? What if humans had to interact with visitors from another planet? Would they treat them any different, any different that they, in history, have treated any race strange to their own. A modern "The day the earth stood still" for me. And a must see!
