Critique ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL (2008)

In the 1980's, Anvil, was the hottest thing in metal, touring with the likes of Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Scorpions and other groups that ended up selling millions of records. They were inspirational to many others bands. A glimpse at stardom,
that never came. " They ripped them off and left them for dead!" says Slash, from "Guns and Roses", a fan. Some 25 years later, we meet lead singer and guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner, back in Toronto, their home city, where they still living near each other. Now in their 50's,they both have a job. "Lips" drives a delivery truck carrying school meals. Reiner is working on a demolition project. They've known each other since they were 14, back in those school days where this madness started. The band is still going, and "Lips" still dares to dream. Small weekend gigs in small venues. But they just got a new manager, a middle-aged "lady" from eastern europe, that has "Masterminded" a 5 weeks tour of Europe. 5 weeks of hell, as it turns out to be! "Everything on the tour went drastically wrong. But at least there was a tour for it to go wrong on." says "Lips", ever the optimist. They get the veteran producer Chris Tsangarides to cut their 13th album. But they end up selling it themselves, cause no record company wants to.
Director Sacha Gervasi was a big fan of Anvil, and he hits all the right notes. The regular scraps between "Lips" and Reiner, the heart-felt making ups, the childlike enthousiasm, the ridiculous, (one cannot help seeing the similarities with "This is Spinal Tap"), the humanity, and the perspective.
A endearing and warmhearted documentary that shows the soft sides beneath the hard surface.
And as "Slash" says : "How many bands stay together for 30 years?" . "You've got the Stones, the Who, U2 -- and Anvil." And Anvil, indeed!
