I can't remember who said: "the 1st thing I read in the morning paper, is the obituaries, to check if I'm in it". So does Caden Cotard, the hypochondriac central character of "Synecdoche New York". With some of my favourite actors and one of my favourite script-writer, this project sounded like a marriage made in heaven. Then again, it could be the case of "La mariée était trop belle". What starts as a straightforward story, develops into a complex "Russian dolls" type of scenario, as Kaufman's wild imagination keeps throwing pieces into the jigsaw puzzle. It's clever, but a bit too clever for its own good. It's also self-indulgent, self-flagellating and pretentious. The final third drags on, and its, drab,drab, drab.... As in most of his scripts, Kaufman has a problem with the ending. A fascinating concept, I believe Kaufman is a genius, but it's ultimately disappointing in its execution. A "Synecdoche", by the way, is a figure of speech, in which a part of something is used to refer, or denote the whole thing. eg: "A 100 sails", for "a 100 ships". or, "a million eyes saw that movie", for "A million persons saw that movie".Or the whole to refer, or denote to a part. eg: "Liverpool beats Leeds"
