Lars, a (very) awkward and lonely bachelor that lives like a part-time recluse, one day introduce to his brother and pregnant sister in law his new girlfriend..... A fully functional sex-doll, ordered off the internet! Sounds like the zanny product of the Farrely's brothers brain, but it's not! It's actually written by Nancy Oliver, of "Six feet under" fame. It's a very weird and bitter-sweet movie, the cast is good, Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson in particular. But It's never clever enough, never emotional enough or neither funny enough. It's too surreal for my taste, especially as the entire town seem to embrace Lars dellusion and accept the innanimate object of desire into their community. It could have been, perhaps, a interesting piece of creative approach into the psychology of loniless, but ultimately bland, like a tepid cup of cocoa.
